1) How to Create a Google Voice Account
For starters, the primary reason that we recommend interns to set up a free Google Voice account upon being hired is to match the intern's area code to the companies area code.
For instance, if an outbound marketing intern–in Austin, TX–is making calls on behalf of a company based out of Chicago, Illinois, it will look odd for call recipients to notice the Austin area code instead of the traditional Chicago area code.
By employing Google Voice, the intern can ensure that their area code will appear more favorably in the eyes of their future clients.
2) Practice Your Cold Calling Techniques
We recommend that you read / watch our other blog posts regarding cold calling. These posts detail tips and tricks, along with proven techniques that result in an effective, lucrative cold call.
Along side your manager, design a basic cold calling script that can be used on a variety of prospects. You may look up templates for this; however, your company has something unique to offer so make sure you are explaining your value proposition.
Finally, it couldn't hurt to run a practice cold call with a family member, friend, or your employer to make sure you are on the right path before your first real cold.
As with anything in life, you will get better and gain more confidence with practice!
3) Utilize an Excel file or CRM software to organize your call metrics
In order to understand how well you are doing when you are prospecting by phone, you should track your calls.
There are two primary options to do this:
You can use an Excel file to keep track of the data. This file can either be created by you or you can find a decent template already created online.
You can employ a free Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software to manage your interactions with potential clients. These CRMs can automate specific tasks such as data entry.
Tracking your cold calls will also help you get an understanding on how many calls you need to make to talk to a prospect and book a meeting. This, in addition to tangibly analyzing your data and taking note of your customer's qualitative information (personal facts, tone, personality) will help you learn how to enhance your lead generation and appointment setting efforts.
4) Obtain a List of Qualified Leads From Your Employer
In order to begin your outbound marketing calling job, you will need individuals and companies to call. Ask your employer if they already have a list of leads they would like you to call or if they plan on purchasing a new list of leads for you.
After obtaining the list of leads and completing the above steps, you should now be ready to make your first live call!
